YVR Security Screening in 2026: CT Scanners, Liquids and Laptops Explained
YVR is expanding CT security screening in 2026. Here is what travellers should know about liquids, laptops and why checkpoint instructions can still vary.

Updated: August 29, 2026
Vancouver International Airport has been rolling out CATSA Plus computed tomography screening, and the practical benefit is simple: at upgraded checkpoints, travellers can leave liquids, aerosols, gels and large electronics inside their carry-on bags. YVR said the technology would extend across all checkpoints during 2026.
What the new scanners change
At upgraded CATSA Plus checkpoints, the security process is designed to reduce unpacking. That can make a noticeable difference when you are travelling with a laptop, family carry-ons or a bag that took ten minutes to organize properly at home.
What the scanners do not change
Your allowed items and liquid-size rules are still governed by Canadian security rules. “Leave it in the bag” does not mean “bring any size.” Scanner convenience and what is permitted are two separate things.
Why instructions may still feel inconsistent
- Different checkpoints can be at different stages of equipment rollout.
- Operational needs can change how a line is managed.
- U.S., international and domestic journeys can involve different processes beyond the security scanner itself.
- Always follow the officer and checkpoint signage in front of you.
The practical YVR habit
Pack as if you might need to remove electronics and liquids, but do not start unpacking until staff or signage asks you to. It keeps the line moving and prevents the classic airport problem of creating work that nobody asked you to do.
Quick questions
Can I keep my laptop in my bag at YVR?
At upgraded CT screening checkpoints, YVR says large electronics can remain in carry-on bags.
Does that mean the liquid limit disappeared?
No. The screening method changed, but travellers should still follow CATSA rules on what can be carried.
The lovely part
The best airport technology is the kind you barely notice. Fewer trays, less unpacking and a calmer start to the trip is a pretty good upgrade.
