Multi-generational travel can be wonderful because the same breakfast table holds three different versions of the family. It can also become exhausting when every decision is optimized for the person who walks fastest, sleeps least or needs the fewest bags.

Choose the flight for the slowest day

A 6 a.m. departure may look cheap until the group needs two taxis at 3:30, a wheelchair request, three sleepy children and breakfast before security. Mid-morning nonstop flights can be worth paying more for when the whole group is travelling together.

Book rooms that create privacy

Connecting rooms, a two-bedroom suite or nearby rooms can be better than putting everyone into one large rental. Adults need quiet, kids need early bedtimes and grandparents may want a morning routine that does not begin with stepping over somebody’s suitcase.

Schedule one anchor thing per day

  • A museum or major sight.
  • A special meal.
  • A beach or pool block.
  • A day trip.
  • Then let the rest of the day breathe.

Plan assistance before the airport

If anyone needs mobility assistance, arrange it with the airline early and confirm it before travel. Put medications, essential documents and one change of clothing in carry-on bags for the people who cannot comfortably go without them.

Quick questions

Should a large family always stay in a vacation rental?

No. Hotels can be easier when different generations need privacy, breakfast, elevators, housekeeping or accessibility services.

How much should we schedule each day?

Usually less than you think. One significant shared activity plus optional smaller plans works well for mixed ages.

The lovely part

The best family trip is not the one where everybody does everything. It is the one where people still like each other at dinner.
