Japan Shinkansen in Autumn 2026: SmartEX, Reserved Seats and Oversized Luggage
Using the Shinkansen in autumn 2026? Learn SmartEX booking, reserved seats, QR boarding and oversized-luggage rules before Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka.

Updated: August 22, 2026
Japan’s bullet trains are wonderfully easy once you understand the few details that matter. For autumn 2026, the biggest practical wins are booking busy trains before you are at the station and handling oversized luggage correctly.
SmartEX covers the Golden Route
The official SmartEX service sells Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen tickets, including the Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka-Hiroshima corridor. Canadian users can access the app in supported app stores, and QR boarding is available for eligible reservations.
Reserved seats are worth more during foliage season
Trains are frequent, but autumn weekends can be busy. A reserved seat is particularly useful if you are travelling as a couple or family and want to sit together rather than wait for the next train.
Know the 160cm luggage rule
- Baggage with combined dimensions of 160cm to 250cm is considered oversized for the relevant Shinkansen rules.
- Certain oversized-baggage seating arrangements must be reserved.
- Turning up without the required arrangement can create an extra fee and hassle.
- If your suitcase is large, measure it at home once and save the number in your phone.
Do not drag luggage through every city
Japan’s luggage-delivery services can make a multi-city trip much nicer. Send the big suitcase ahead and travel one night with a small bag if your itinerary includes a ryokan, mountain stop or tight rail day.
Quick questions
How early can I reserve SmartEX trains?
SmartEX currently allows some reservations far in advance, although specific seat types and discount products have different booking windows.
Can I just take any suitcase onto the Shinkansen?
Normal luggage is straightforward, but oversized baggage has special rules on covered trains, so measure large cases before travelling.
The lovely part
The Shinkansen is one of those travel things that is both transportation and part of the memory. Buy an ekiben, sit by the window and let the day change cities for you.
