Heathrow 2-Litre Liquid Rule in 2026: What You Can Pack Now
Heathrow now allows liquids in containers up to 2 litres through security, but many return airports still use 100ml limits. Pack for both directions.

Updated: August 22, 2026
Heathrow has one of those travel changes people genuinely enjoy: upgraded security scanners now allow liquids in containers up to 2 litres through security at Terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5, and large electronics can stay in your cabin bag. The catch is that your flight home may follow completely different rules.
What Heathrow allows now
- Liquids can be in containers up to 2 litres.
- Liquids can stay inside your cabin bag during screening.
- Laptops and other large electronics can stay inside the bag.
- Metal or insulated reusable bottles should be empty at security and can be refilled afterwards.
Why the return flight matters
The UK government still tells travellers to check the specific airport because liquid rules vary. Schiphol, for example, continues to state a 100ml container limit even though liquids can stay inside the bag during screening. A 500ml bottle of shampoo may leave Heathrow perfectly legally and become a problem on the return journey.
The easiest packing strategy
If you are doing a round trip, pack toiletries to the stricter airport on your itinerary unless you are happy to check them on the way back. Heathrow’s relaxed rule is most useful for one-way trips, gifts, families and travellers carrying more substantial liquids for the outbound journey.
Do not assume scanner technology means the same rule everywhere
Airports can use modern scanners and still apply different liquid limits. Check each departure and connection airport separately, especially when your itinerary crosses countries.
Quick questions
Can I take a 1-litre bottle through Heathrow security?
Yes, Heathrow says liquids in containers up to 2 litres are permitted through security.
Do I still need a clear plastic liquids bag at Heathrow?
Heathrow says liquids can stay in your cabin bag, but check your exact terminal guidance on the day of travel.
The lovely part
It is a small airport change, but it removes one of those silly little rituals that used to make everyone repack a perfectly good bag on the floor.
