The EU Entry/Exit System is fully operational in 2026. Canadians should expect digital border records and biometrics when entering Schengen for short stays.

Europe’s border experience changed in a real way this year. The Entry/Exit System is fully operational at external border crossings used by participating Schengen countries, replacing routine passport stamps for covered non-EU short-stay travellers with digital records.

What EES records

The system can record travel-document information, facial images, fingerprints and entry or exit details. It is designed to show when a traveller entered and left rather than relying on physical stamps in the passport.

Who this matters to

Visa-exempt Canadian visitors travelling for a short stay are generally among the travellers who encounter EES at participating external borders. Long-stay visa holders, residence-permit holders and other categories can be treated differently, so the exact status matters.

EES does not give you extra days

  • The familiar Schengen short-stay limit remains a maximum of 90 days in any 180-day period for eligible visa-free visits.
  • Digital records make entry and exit easier to track, but they do not change your personal responsibility to comply.
  • Keep your itinerary and accommodation details available in case border officers ask normal entry questions.

Why first-time processing can take longer

A first EES interaction may involve biometric enrollment rather than a simple passport glance. Build that reality into an airport connection or cross-border train/ferry day instead of assuming an old passport-stamp timeline.

Quick questions

Will my passport still be stamped?

For travellers covered by EES, the system replaces routine manual passport stamping with digital entry and exit records.

Is EES the same as ETIAS?

No. EES is already operating at borders. ETIAS is the separate pre-travel authorization expected later in 2026.

The lovely part

The system sounds technical, but the traveller version is simple: arrive with a little more time, use the same passport throughout the trip, and know that the stamp book is becoming a digital record.
