Europe Airport Arrivals After EES: What Biometric Borders Mean for Connections
Europe’s Entry/Exit System is fully operational in 2026. If your first Schengen airport is also a connection point, plan around biometric border processing.

Updated: August 23, 2026
The Entry/Exit System, or EES, is now part of the arrival experience for many non-EU travellers entering the Schengen area for a short stay. The system records passport information and biometric data, including facial images and fingerprints. That matters most when your first European airport is not your final destination.
Your first Schengen entry point matters
If you fly Vancouver to Paris to Rome, Paris is normally where you cross the external Schengen border. The immigration step therefore happens before the onward intra-Schengen flight. A connection that looked comfortable on paper can feel tighter when a new border process is involved.
What EES replaces
The system replaces routine passport stamping with digital entry and exit records for covered travellers. The European Commission says EES has been fully operational at external Schengen border points since April 10, 2026.
Build your connection for the real journey
- Allow time to leave the arriving aircraft.
- Expect immigration or biometric processing before an onward Schengen flight.
- Account for terminal changes and security if your airport requires them.
- Avoid making a separate-ticket connection tight, because the second airline may have no obligation to protect you.
Frequent Europe travellers should still count days
EES helps digitize entry and exit records, but it does not change the basic short-stay rule for visa-exempt visitors. You are still responsible for staying within the permitted period.
Quick questions
Does EES apply to Canadians?
Canadians travelling visa-free for a short stay are generally within the group covered by EES when crossing participating external Schengen borders.
Is EES the same as ETIAS?
No. EES is the border entry/exit system. ETIAS is a separate pre-travel authorization that is not yet operational as of September 7, 2026.
The lovely part
A connection is not just the number of minutes between flights. It is every little thing you have to do between one seat and the next.
