Where to Go in Europe After Labour Day 2026 for Warm Weather and Fewer Crowds
Looking for Europe after Labour Day 2026? These warm September and October destinations trade peak-summer crowds for beaches, food and easier city days.

Updated: August 28, 2026
The first week after Labour Day is one of the nicest travel pivots of the year. Northern Europe starts to cool, school holidays fade, and parts of southern Europe still hold onto beach weather and long evenings without the intensity of July and August.
Lisbon plus the coast
Portugal is easy to love in September because you can combine city mornings with ocean afternoons. Stay in Lisbon, then add Cascais, Sintra or a few nights farther south. The practical advantage is variety: if one day feels too warm for hills and museums, you can move the day toward the water.
Sicily and Malta for a later summer feeling
Sicily and Malta often stay warm well into early autumn. They work especially well for travellers who want sea views, old streets and food to be the centre of the trip rather than a packed attraction checklist.
Athens plus an island, but keep it simple
September can be a lovely time to pair Athens with one island. Avoid trying to collect islands like stamps. Four nights on one island usually gives you more of the thing people actually came for: slow breakfasts, a favourite beach and enough time to stop checking the clock.
Dubrovnik, Seville and Madeira for different moods
- Choose Dubrovnik if you want dramatic old-city scenery with the option of coastal day trips.
- Choose Seville if food, architecture and evenings matter more than beach time.
- Choose Madeira for scenery, walks and a year-round island feel.
Quick questions
Is September still high season in southern Europe?
In some famous places it can still be busy, but the mix is generally different from the peak school-holiday weeks of July and August.
Should I book cancellable hotels?
Yes. September is also wildfire, heat and storm season in some regions, so flexibility is worth having.
The lovely part
You do not need to “beat” summer. Going just after it can be better: warmer water, calmer mornings and enough space to notice where you are.
