Paying Abroad in 2026: Why Canadians Should Think Twice Before Choosing CAD

An overseas card machine may offer to charge you in Canadian dollars. That is dynamic currency conversion, and the local-currency option deserves a closer look.

A restaurant terminal in Rome asks whether you want to pay €82 or a neat Canadian-dollar amount. The CAD number feels reassuring because you understand it immediately. That convenience is exactly why dynamic currency conversion, or DCC, deserves a second look before you tap.

What DCC actually does

DCC lets the merchant or ATM convert the purchase into your home currency rather than letting your card network and issuer handle the conversion in the normal way. Visa notes that the displayed home-currency amount can include an exchange rate and additional fees or markup.

Why local currency is often the cleaner comparison

When you choose the local currency, you avoid accepting the merchant-side conversion offer. Your card issuer still may charge foreign-exchange fees depending on the card, but at least you are comparing costs within the terms of a card you selected rather than an exchange rate offered at the terminal.

What to look for on the screen

  • The amount in local currency.
  • The amount in Canadian dollars.
  • The conversion rate being offered.
  • Any additional fee or markup disclosed.

ATMs can do it too

The same question appears at cash machines. An ATM may offer to “guarantee” a CAD amount. Read the screen slowly. Choosing local currency does not prevent you from making the withdrawal; it simply declines that machine’s conversion offer.

Quick questions

Should I always choose local currency abroad?

It is usually the option travellers compare first, but check your card’s own foreign-exchange terms and the full DCC disclosure before deciding.

Can a merchant choose DCC for me?

Visa says merchants and ATMs should give cardholders a choice and should not select the conversion on their behalf.

The lovely part

The funny thing is that the less familiar number on the screen can be the more transparent choice. You can always convert it in your head later over dessert.
