Christmas and New Year 2026 Travel: What to Book on September 7

Planning Christmas or New Year travel for 2026? September is the month to lock the scarce parts first and leave flexible pieces for later.

The nicest holiday trips often start with a very unglamorous September task: deciding what is actually fixed. Once you know the dates that cannot move, the rest of the trip becomes much easier to build without paying peak-season prices for every single piece.

Book the bottlenecks first

  • Peak-date flights if work or school dates are fixed.
  • Small or distinctive hotels you would be genuinely sad to lose.
  • Holiday meals, special trains or events with limited capacity.
  • Airport parking or transfers if you are travelling on the busiest days.

Leave flexible inventory flexible

A large city with thousands of hotel rooms does not always need to be prepaid in September. Use cancellable reservations where possible and keep comparing. The goal is to secure the scarce things without freezing the whole trip too early.

Check documents before you buy non-refundable pieces

Look at passport expiry, visa or travel-authorization requirements, and the name printed in each passport. Europe is introducing ETIAS later in 2026, while the UK already requires an ETA for many Canadian visitors. Entry requirements belong near the beginning of the checklist, not the night before departure.

Build one “bad weather” day into winter trips

Winter travel can be gorgeous and occasionally annoying. A spare half-day or flexible final night can protect an expensive dinner, cruise, ski booking or long-haul flight from one small disruption.

Quick questions

What should I book first for Christmas travel?

Fixed-date flights and scarce accommodation usually deserve attention first.

Should every hotel be non-refundable to save money?

Not necessarily. Flexibility can be worth more than a small discount during a busy travel period.

The lovely part

The goal is not to schedule every minute. It is to make the difficult things easy so the holiday itself can still feel soft around the edges.
